Towards deployment and upscaling of sustainable management of the sediments across the Danube catchment basin
Within the framework of the “Restore our Ocean and Waters” Mission, DANSER aims to restore and sustainably manage sediment balance and water/groundwater quality in the Danube River Basin. The project seeks to improve critical ecological factors through multidisciplinary approaches, involving engaged stakeholders in monitoring, modelling, restoration measures, and the development of result-oriented decision-making tools.
The Danube River, one of Europe’s most significant rivers, holds immense ecological and socio-economic value.
However, it has been affected by human activities that have substantially impacted on the sediment balance and quality. These alterations create environmental stressors on delicate ecosystems, increase flood risks, create navigation constraints, and compromise biodiversity.
In response to these pressing issues, the DANSER project seeks to restore sediment balance, focusing on the Danube River-Black Sea system, targeting large-scale deployment and impact already in the midterm (2030). It aims to improve sediment flow and quality and integrate such actions and knowledge with EU and worldwide counterparts (existing bodies, digital platforms, events, and know-how), all while sustaining local economies.

Approach
DANSER employs a comprehensive, multi-layer approach that combines expertise in sediment studies, modeling, and nature-based solutions (NBS) to assess natural and human-induced impacts. The project focuses on historical reconstruction, hydrotechnical interventions, and monitoring tools to improve biodiversity, ecosystem services, and local community engagement. The approach is structured across four layers:
Geo-bio-physical sediment parameters
Advanced analytics
Knowledge creation, and
knowledge transfer to key actors and the public for replication, upscaling, and community support.
Key Activities
EU Environmental Policy
Instruments and Strategies
DANSER aligns with key EU policies, helping to ensure that the project, by restoring and managing sediments along the Danube River, is in line with the broader environmental goals of the European Union, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
EU policy to protect and improve water quality, ensuring all waters are in good ecological and chemical status by 2027.
Establishes requirements for assessing flood risks and implementing management plans to protect populations and ecosystems from flood damage.
Aiming for a carbon-neutral and sustainable economy by 2050, focusing on climate change mitigation, environmental protection, and a circular economy.
Plan to restore nature and improve biodiversity by 2030, with actions to expand protected areas, reduce species loss, and promote sustainable agriculture and forestry.
“Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030“
This project is part of the ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030’ Mission which aims to improve the health of our oceans, seas, and inland waters. The Danube-Black Sea is one of the area-based ‘lighthouses’ in major sea and river basins where the Mission operates to ensure implementation across Europe and beyond. These lighthouses serve as living labs for demonstrating, deploying, and scaling up solutions.
